She is genetically predisposed to both Sciatica and Psoriatic arthritis, and she believes that she is being "punished" for thinking light of her mother, who has both. She doesn't think much of herself, and she has a very deep-seated fear of doctors and modern medicine--she doesn't want to be glued to a doctor for the rest of her life. I remember putting it down twice, but after contemplating its place on the shelf for the third time, I bought it. That book kept pulling on my soul – an ancient call from another time and place locked within me. I had reached a turning point in my journey to reclaim myself and my relationships with Mother Nature, the Sidhe, and the Otherworld.<BR/><BR/>As a child, I spent countless hours exploring the woods of oak, beech, maple, and birch near my home in Connecticut. There was one tree – a red oak – where I would go for afternoon naps. I had dreams about fields dotted with sacred standing stones; of old-growth forests teeming with wolves, bears, and cougars; and of oceans alive with the songs of seals, whales, and dolphins. I had visions of the Shining Ones. I loved the mist and twilight hours. I often wrote about my experiences.<BR/><BR/>My maternal grandmother, Mary Rosalita McConville, held a special place in my heart. I do not know much about her heritage, except that her father hailed from County Armagh, Northern Ireland, and her mother from Scotland. She had an uncanny connection with Earth and all relations, abilities to “see” people with no strings attached, an impish sense of humor, and a love for life. She instilled in me a fondness for books, poetry, storytelling, music, and Brighid. As an ecologist, I have always considered the earth to be part of myself. With that being said, I agree with you that most people these days create discord with the very thing that sustains us, the earth. However, I feel the underlying “why” we are out of discord is likely more than simply being out of balance with one of the other directions. I feel it oftentimes stems from something much deeper. I feel you mentioned it in your book, but didn’t take into account the likelihood of the very deep hold it has within. And this, I feel is caused by the complete disconnection most have to where they live. <BR/><BR/>As many, especially in the United States, have not resided in an area for ten years, let alone a lifetime or a family over generations, they have lost their “sense of place”. To me this is mainly due to the fact that there is simply no connection to the area of the earth they inhabit, they have no history with it. In March and April of 2004, I was reading The Mist Filled Path while on a retreat/rotation...one morning, I received the call that my cousin, Moira Haggerty, had died...too young...the writngs of yours that I held in my backpack were very soothing at that time. I was many states away from her, but was lucky to be in the middle of an old growth redwood forest and was able to take time for some personal ceremony, briefly before our day started...really, the day was blessed both with your thoughts, as well as the guest we shared space/time with.
